PPO (often modified with polystyrene as PPE/PS) is an amorphous engineering plastic with high heat resistance (up to 140°C), excellent dimensional stability, low moisture absorption, and outstanding electrical insulation properties. Common applications include automotive fuse boxes, water treatment housings, solar junction boxes, and large appliance components. Modification is essential since pure PPO is hard to process. Glass fiber reinforced PPO (10-30%) increases stiffness for pump housings and fluid handling parts. Flame-retardant PPO grades (V-0 to 5VA, halogen-free or FR) are widely used for battery casings, TV housings, and electrical connectors. Hydrolysis-resistant PPO is specified for hot water pump and dishwasher components. High-flow PPO allows thin-wall molding for compact electronics. PPO/PA blends improve chemical resistance for automotive under-hood parts. Conductive PPO grades are used for cleanroom equipment. Low-warp PPO is ideal for large, flat housings. PPO is known for low toxicity and is used in medical instrument housings.
